The connection between our gut and our brain is powerful. Our diet could even be a contributory factor to depression. If it’s that powerful, imagine being able to eat to feed your brain.
The good news is that you can.
Our brain needs fuel to survive, and if we give it the right food, we can improve it’s performance and it’s longevity. Our environment throws plenty at our brain to prevent it from working at peak performance, for example, pollution, fatigue and stress, lack of sleep, sugar which all lead to oxidative stress.
So what can you eat to boost your brain?
Try incorporating some of these nutrient-dense foods into your diet:
🧠 Oily fish: Fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for brain health and can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
🥬 Leafy greens: Greens like kale, spinach, and collard greens are packed with vitamins and minerals that support brain function, including folate and magnesium.
🍫 Dark chocolate (yes really!): Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which are antioxidants that may improve blood flow to the brain and reduce inflammation. Enjoy a small square of dark chocolate as a mood-boosting treat!
🌰 Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, and chia seeds are great sources of healthy fats, protein, and micronutrients that support brain health.
🍊 Citrus fruits: Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are high in vitamin C, which is important for brain function and may help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
🍎 Remember to drink! Insufficient hydration is one of the biggest contributors to poor concentration.
